The Story of a Memory in Didim: Those Who Came by the Sea, Remembered by the Sea

The salt-scented winds of the Aegean once again stirred memories, just as they do every year. Along the shores of Didim, the waves seemed to carry whispers from a century ago—whispers of a journey, of separation, and of putting down roots anew.

On the morning of April 5, as the sun slowly rose over Kovela Harbor, the sea was calmer than ever.
As if it, too, knew…
Today was not an ordinary day.

Once, in 1924, there were people who arrived on these shores with both hope and sorrow. They buried the pain of the lands they had left behind deep in their hearts and stepped onto Didim’s soil to hold on to a new life. In their eyes were both the grief of farewell and a quiet resistance for the future.

Years passed…
Homes were built, children grew up, and the streets filled with life. Yet the trace of that very first step never faded.

Now, their descendants gather once again on the same shore.
Flowers in their hands…
Gratitude in their hearts…

As the crowd assembled at Kovela Harbor moves silently toward the sea, the wind gently brushes against their faces. Perhaps that touch is a greeting from the past. Perhaps those waves still carry the memory of the boats that once reached these shores.

When the clock strikes 14:00, flowers are released into the sea one by one.
Each flower, a memory…
Each wave, a prayer…

As the sea gently carries those flowers into the distance, it is as if an invisible bridge forms between past and present. A journey that began a century ago continues even today.

Didim is no longer just a city…
It is a memory, a heritage, a stance of loyalty and remembrance…

And this meaningful gathering, led by Didim Rumeli Kültürünü Yaşatma ve Dayanışma Derneği, continues to carry the traces of the past into the future.

Because some stories begin with the sea…
And are remembered by the sea.

We Remember Our Ancestors – Population Exchange Commemoration Ceremony

We invite all members of the public to the flower-laying ceremony we will hold in remembrance of our ancestors who arrived in Didim through the population exchange on April 5, 1924, honoring them with respect, mercy, and gratitude.

Didim’de Bir Hatıranın Hikâyesi: Denizle Gelenler, Denizle Anılanlar

Ege’nin tuz kokulu rüzgârı, her yıl olduğu gibi yine hafızaları yokladı. Didim’in kıyılarında dalgalar, sanki bir asır öncesinden kalan fısıltıları taşıyordu. O fısıltılar ki; bir yolculuğun, bir ayrılığın ve yeniden kök salmanın hikâyesiydi.

5 Nisan sabahı, güneş Kovela Limanı’nın üzerine ağır ağır yükselirken, deniz her zamankinden daha sakindi. Sanki o da biliyordu…
Bugün sıradan bir gün değildi.

Bir zamanlar, 1924 yılında, bu kıyılara umutla ve hüzünle gelen insanlar vardı. Arkalarında bıraktıkları toprakların acısını kalplerine gömmüş, yeni bir hayata tutunmak için Didim’e ayak basmışlardı. Onların gözlerinde hem vedanın hüznü hem de geleceğe dair sessiz bir direniş vardı.

Aradan yıllar geçti…
Evler kuruldu, çocuklar büyüdü, sokaklara hayat doldu. Ama o ilk adımın izi hiç silinmedi.

Şimdi onların torunları, aynı kıyıda yeniden bir araya geliyor.
Ellerinde çiçekler…
Yüreklerinde minnet…

Kovela Limanı’nda toplanan kalabalık, denize doğru sessizce ilerlerken, rüzgâr hafifçe yüzlere dokunuyor. Belki de o dokunuş, geçmişten gelen bir selamdır. Belki de o dalgalar, bir zamanlar bu kıyılara ulaşan teknelerin hatırasını hâlâ saklıyordur.

Saatler 14:00’ü gösterdiğinde, çiçekler birer birer denize bırakılıyor.
Her çiçek, bir hatıra…
Her dalga, bir dua…

Deniz, o çiçekleri usulca alıp uzaklara taşırken, sanki geçmişle bugün arasında görünmeyen bir köprü kuruluyor. Bir asır önce başlayan yolculuk, bugün hâlâ devam ediyor.

Didim, sadece bir şehir değil artık…
Bir hafıza, bir miras, bir vefa duruşu…

Ve bu anlamlı buluşma, Didim Rumeli Kültürünü Yaşatma ve Dayanışma Derneği öncülüğünde, geçmişin izlerini geleceğe taşımaya devam ediyor.

Çünkü bazı hikâyeler denizle başlar…
Ve yine denizle anılır.

5 Nisan 1924 tarihinde mübadele ile Didim’e gelen atalarımızı saygı, rahmet ve minnetle anmak amacıyla düzenleyeceğimiz çiçek atma törenine tüm halkımız davetlidir.
